Looking to help?

We are always looking for the assistance of a few more parents. Little Athletics at a Centre or Region level is based on parents or other family members volunteering some of their time each week to provide a program of track and field activities for children of all ages. There are many ways parents, grandparents or friends can assist on a Saturday morning. One of the great benefits of volunteering is you meet like minded people who share your interests.

Each week we require 30 volunteers to assist with tasks around the track, for example recording of results or measuring jumps or throws. Families can also help setting up the equipment from 7:45am or returning it to the equipment store at the end of the morning.

This season we would like parents or grandparents to assist in the canteen. If we have sufficient volunteers for the canteen, a roster will be drawn up to allow parents time to watch their children on the track. Parents can nominate their own task each week when they sign in their children at the Controller of Officials table at the front of the clubrooms.

We would prefer parents to volunteer rather than enforcing a roster similar to that used at other clubs. Please remember we are there for the benefit of the children and without the volunteers, the Centre would not operate.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS TO REMAIN AT THE LITTLE ATHLETICS TRACK AT ALL TIMES. CHILDREN CANNOT BE DROPPED OFF AND COLLECTED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE COMPETITION.

Some good general advice to Parents.

 – Don’t force an unwilling child to participate.

 – Remember that children are involved in organised sports for their enjoyment, not yours.

 – Encourage your child to complete within the rules.

 – Teach your child that honest effort is as important as victory. All results should be accepted without undue disappointment.

 – Turn defeat into victory by helping your child work towards skill improvement and good sportsmanship.

 – Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing an event. Remember, they are “having a go”.

 – Children learn best by example. Applaud good efforts by all children.

 – Do not publicly question an official’s judgement, and never their honesty.

 – Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches and officials. They give their time to provide recreational activities for your child.

 – Endeavour to get children to competition days on time. Late arrival can result in program delays and late finishes.

 – Take necessary action to ensure your children do not indulge in anti-social behaviour. This is disruptive at best and is a major cause for children dropping out of Little Athletics.
